POSITIVE START FOR VENTURI FORMULA E TEAM
Hong-Kong, December 2nd, 2017 – Monaco VENTURI Formula E team has just taken part in the opening round of the fourth Formula E season. The thrilling race through the streets of Hong Kong confirmed that the Monegasque outfit can expect to challenge for podium finishes this year!
MIXED PERFORMANCE IN TESTING AND QUALIFYING
The team fought back to show their true quality in the race, after a mixed performance in free testing and qualifying. Maro ENGEL started back in 14th on the grid, while Edoardo MORTARA, making his competitive debut in Formula E, was down in 19th after struggling for grip on a still-dirty track and damaging his car in a collision with a wall.
A RACE AS AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER
The race itself was interrupted by a red flag on the opening lap. By that time, Maro ENGEL had already gained four places. When the race resumed, Maro and Edoardo moved up the field in spectacular style, and by the midway point MORTARA had improved his position by eight places, and ENGEL seven!
After jumping into his second car, Maro ENGEL quickly moved up into 4th place. Meanwhile, Edoardo MORTARA – also behind the wheel of his second car – upped the speed and edged his way into the top ten.
The two drivers were maintaining a good pace while managing their energy consumption carefully and at that point, the team owned by Gildo PASTOR saw their hopes of a podium placing, or at the very least a double-points finish, start to rise.
Maro ENGEL successfully held off the challenge of Felix ROSENQVIST, while Edoardo MORTARA managed to gain yet another place in the final laps.
Fourth and eighth place finishes for the two drivers would have been a hugely encouraging result for the opening race. However, Maro ENGEL picked up a ten-place penalty for inadvertently exceeding the maximum permitted power for a few moments. Maro dropped back to 14th, with Edoardo moving up a place to 8th. Sam BIRD was also penalised, meaning Edoardo’s final position was 7th.
“In the end, it was a fine race and that’s what we have to take away with us. The team did a great job. The pit stop was perfect. The car was excellent. And that’s the most important thing in my view.”
Maro ENGEL, VENTURI FORMULA E TEAM driver
“It’s brilliant to be in the points in the first race. To be honest, after testing in Valencia, it was looking difficult. I have mixed feelings, because I think we could have done better. I can’t wait for the second race.”
